The Montana Department of Labor & Industry operates Montana’s Unemployment Insurance Program. Montana unemployment insurance pays temporary benefits to help the 4.3 percent of Montana workers who have lost their job or had work hours reduced through no fault of their own.

Unemployment insurance helps lessen the negative impact that unemployment has on Montana’s economy. Unemployment insurance benefits are not part of public assistance, and funds are not allocated according to need. Benefit payments are calculated according to wages earned during a qualifying period of time.
Montana employers pay unemployment insurance taxes that cover all costs of the unemployment program. No money is deducted from employee paychecks for unemployment insurance benefits. When you file for unemployment, make sure you receive all the benefits you’re entitled to by providing accurate information, responding to all requests for information on time, and meeting all the benefits eligibility criteria.
