Illinois Unemployment Office

The Illinois unemployment office has created a program that is designed to provide short-term financial support for unemployed individuals in the state. This program is known as the Unemployment Insurance program, or UI.

The Illinois Department of Employment Security (IDES) is responsible for determining if an individual is eligible to receive unemployment benefits provided by this program. The program is administered by the state and specializes in providing financial assistance to individuals, who through no fault of their own, are unemployed. The financial assistance, however, is only temporary and unemployed individuals must be actively seeking work during their unemployment period. IDES collects taxes for unemployment insurance from employers within the state and then returns the money to individuals who are eligible to collect unemployment insurance benefits. Employees do not contribute monetarily in any way to the unemployment insurance system.
