North Carolina’s Unemployment Office
The first unemployment program in North Carolina started in 1935, the same year the federal government asked the various states to adopt unemployment insurance for those who had recently lost their job. Though North Carolina was not the first unemployment program in the nation (Wisconsin beat everybody to the punch in 1932), it was one of the first.
Like other unemployment programs, North Carolina's program is funded by the federal government, but all benefits are earned through unemployment taxes. The state’s office is named the Division Of Employment Security or DES. Its central office location is in Raleigh, and contacting them is best accomplished by phone, as they operate a “secure” site that is rarely visited by state residents.
